Simple Effects Using Layers I mentioned earlier that a lot of the GIMP s special effects either assume that you re using layers, or they create new layers of their own. A good example is the drop shadow. Drop Shadows Text on its own, in a single color, can look flat and boring. Adding a shadow makes it look more three-dimensional, like it s floating above the page. You know your text is on a layer by itself, but a drop shadow makes it look like a separate layer to everyone else! A drop shadow has another useful property: it adds a dark edge to light-colored text (or vice versa). This helps if you need to show text against a complex background that includes both light and dark colors. A drop shadow can only be generated under any layer with transparent parts, such as a text layer. Transparency is how the GIMP decides where the shadow will be. To make a drop shadow for a layer, make sure the right layer is highlighted in the Layers dialog, and then go to the menu system:
