The default, White, means the full layer remains visible at first (until you change that by painting some black on the mask). This is almost always what you want, but the other options are there if you need them. The new layer mask shows up as a thumbnail preview in the Layers dialog (Figure 5-41). There are two important points to note about the layer mask preview.
